Shocking Discovery At Stearns Lake After Man 'Tripped Over ... A Grenade,' Another Found

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (AP) — A man literally tripped over a grenade at Stearns Lake in Boulder County and even picked it up before quickly putting it back on the ground. Another grenade was also later found.

"We were walking along the bank and Anthony was taking a step and he tripped over something and he looked down," said Raechel Wine.

She and her fiance, Anthony Perkins, had just finished an afternoon of fishing at Stearns Lake northwest of Broomfield on Tuesday and were starting to head home when they discovered the grenade which looked eerily authentic.

"You could see the rivets in it and you could see the pin was still in it but underneath the hammer there was a whole bunch of mud," said Wine.

The couple left the area and called 911. Investigators later confirmed what they believed, it was a live grenade.

The grenade was discontinued in 1960 and likely came from the World War II era.

Bomb squad crews detonated the device overnight using C-4 explosives.

"The deputy said that it was probably something that washed ashore," said Wine.

Deputies said no damage was done and while the type of grenade has been determined, the question of where it came from and who put it there are questions that may remain unanswered.

"We're very grateful that it didn't go off when Anthony tripped over it," said Wine.

Deputies said the area where the grenade was found is where water has recently receded which leads them to believe it has been there for quite a while.

Later Wednesday afternoon the Boulder County Sheriff's Dispatch confirmed to CBS4 deputies returned to the lake for a report of another grenade that was found.
