Emergency Shelters Provided For Stranded Travelers On Vail Pass

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Snow has been piling up on Vail Pass but things were a little smoother on the roads on Tuesday.

Interstate 70 over the pass was closed much of the day Monday and into the overnight hours, stranding dozens of drivers who couldn't find a hotel for the night. It reopened without many problems Tuesday morning.

The Red Cross opened emergency shelters in Vail to house approximately 60 people who were stranded.

"Compared to Texas you don't see that around there but … I'm from Russia too, so it brings back memories," one driver said.

"My son had a morning flight, so he took off at 3 a.m., and I think it took him five hours to get to DIA," another driver said. "The longest part was getting through up to Eisenhower."

By Tuesday evening the conditions on I-70 were improved and traffic was moving at a steady pace. But some truckers were having some problems and more snow was expected to move in as the evening progresses.
