Segregation Line Repainted In Denver Neighborhood To Bring Community Together

DENVER (CBS4) - A Denver neighborhood came together on Sunday to move beyond a controversial color line.

A line of many colors was added to the Whittier neighborhood recently. It was supposed to highlight a past "race line" that kept black families from moving into certain areas, but the color line rubbed some residents the wrong way. They said they didn't want to be reminded of ugly history.

The neighborhood association president, Darrell Watson, told CBS4 some areas of Denver are still unwilling to have discussions about race, but not where he lives.

"I know as the president of the neighborhood association and someone who lives here and has lived here for 20 years, I'm willing to listen, take action and work to make sure the neighborhood is inclusive and that we come together," Watson said.

The association added the handprints of neighborhood children to change the tone of the line. Rain temporarily delayed the project.
