E-Scooter Rider Accused Of Crashing Into Cop Faces DUI Charges

DENVER (CBS4) -- A man who crashed an e-scooter into a police officer -- and the officer's patrol car -- is suspected of driving under the influence, according to the Denver Police Department. It happened Saturday evening at 21st and Market streets, just a block from Coors Field.

"The defendant being heavily impaired by an unknown amount of unknown alcoholic beverages, carelessly struck Sgt. Kinipple [who was] standing on the sidewalk performing police duties, while working the in-crowd of the Rockies game," investigators stated in the probable cause statement.

The officer suffered a sprained thumb and scraped his knee.

"During the collision, the defendant was flung several feet into the street causing self-inflicted injuries," police stated. "[He] exhibited several indicators of intoxication."

Because of his injuries he was unable to perform a roadside sobriety test and he refused a blood or breath test, according to police.

The scooter rider was taken to the hospital and remained hospitalized on Monday, according to police.

He was cited with riding a scooter on the sidewalk, DUI, and careless driving resulting in injury.
