School District To Allow Teachers, Staff To Carry Guns On Campus
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- A school district in Southern Colorado will allow teachers and staff to carry guns on campus.
The Hanover School District 28 board voted 3-2 on Wednesday to allow school employees to volunteer to be armed on the job after undergoing training.
The district's two schools serve about 270 students about 30 miles southeast of Colorado Springs, and it takes law enforcement an average of 20 minutes to get there. The district currently shares an armed school resource officer with four other school districts.
The school board's next step is to develop a policy that includes training and weapons permit requirements.
"We're all going to have to come together and work together to put together the policies and the programs and the training to ensure that this is done correctly so that there's absolutely no risk to our students," said Hanover School Board president Mark McPherson.
The plan likely won't take effect until the next school year.
