Driver Of School Bus That Crashed Arrested On Suspicion Of Drug Use

LYONS, Colo. (CBS4) - The 39-year-old driver of a school bus has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs after the bus she was driving crashed, injuring several students.

The bus was headed west on Highway 7 in South St. Vrain Canyon after picking up students from Lyons High School at approximately 4 p.m.

The students all attend schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District.

Police said the driver, who has been identified as Elizabeth Burris, lost control about eight miles outside of town. The bus hit a mountainside and rolled over.

In addition to Burris, who was injured, five students on board were taken to the hospital. Their ages range from 7 to 15, and two were described as having serious injuries. It's not clear how badly Burris was hurt.

Members of the school district were on scene Monday night.

"They're being taken care of, we have staff on scene who are there to support the families. Their safety is our No. 1 priority, so we want to make sure people are there," said a school district spokesperson.

Burris was released from the hospital booked in Boulder County Jail on charges of of child abuse, vehicular assault and driving under the influence.
