Rural School District To Vote On Whether To Arm Teachers
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A school district in rural El Paso County is set to decide whether to arm teachers.
The vote is scheduled to take place at a board meeting on Wednesday night. Wednesday is the four year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Hanover School District 28 serves 270 students about 30 miles southeast of Colorado Springs. It takes law enforcement an average of 20 minutes to get there. The district currently shares an armed school resource officer with four other school districts.
A board member told the Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs he believes arming teachers is a necessary precaution.
There have never been any attacks at the district's two schools.
According to Joe Watt, spokesman for the Colorado Association of School Boards, two other school districts in Colorado allow teachers to be armed. They are Dolores County School District in southwestern Colorado and the Frenchman School District in northeastern Colorado.
