Riot Fest Begins Three-Day Concert At New Denver Home

DENVER (CBS4) - Riot Fest, the three-day concert originally slated for rural Arapahoe County, started Friday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

About 20,000 people are expected every day -- a fourth the size of a crowd at a Broncos game.

The music festival was supposed to take place near Byers, east of Denver, but residents didn't want an encore. So organizers searched for a new home and found one in Denver County.

Noise from music acts on Friday afternoon could be heard in the surrounding neighborhoods.

But Mike Guiietz, a resident of the nearby Jefferson Park, said the worst event at the stadium is the annual Colorado-Colorado State college football game.

"When you mix a bunch of college kids and football and alcohol, sometimes you get a bit of trouble," he said.

When Riot Fest inked a deal with Denver County to move the festival, it sought protection so that the county couldn't pull its permit. Still, if Riot Fest is too loud, the city could fine the organizers.
