Removal Of Car Closing Red Mountain Pass Road

OURAY, Colo. (AP) - The highway connecting Ouray and Silverton is being closed so workers can remove a vehicle that plunged 400 feet to the valley floor below the road.

U.S. Highway 550 over Red Mountain Pass is set to close at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

The Durango Herald reports it was closed for six hours Wednesday as a crane attempted to remove the vehicle. On Thursday, crews will use a wrecker to try to bring the vehicle closer to the crane.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning the closure of the only direct route from Ouray to Silverton could be a long one. A detour adds about 150 miles to what is normally a 25-mile trip.
