Rare Wildlife Make Winter Appearances

DENVER (CBS4) - A variety of rare wildlife encounters is making this winter's scenery even more picturesque and quintessentially Coloradan.

At the end of January, Nancy McKendry was driving on Red Mountain Pass and encountered three lynx. Two scampered into the brush, she said, but the third walked right up to the car. She recognized that the lynx was, "Quite a rare sight to see!"

Several days ago, just before the last snowstorm, three bobcats crossed Jerry Bauman's yard in South Fork. One stayed on the road while another ventured toward the front door onto the porch, and the third walked across the driveway. Bauman captured photos of the cats while standing in the front door.

The bobcats appeared again on Friday morning, and left footprints all around the house.

Last Thursday, our Copter4 was flying over the Denver metro region when a large bird soaring across the sunrise was spotted. Several minutes of footage was captured, and viewers decided the bird was a Bald Eagle, gracefully flying through the morning skies over the plains and mountains of Colorado.

Although not particularly rare, Marsha Hobert saw an elk posing perfectly in Estes Park. She took this photo at McGregor Ranch on January 22, where the elk was in a meadow that backed up to rocky peaks.
