Rapids, Earthquakes Play To Scoreless Tie

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — Alan Gordon hit the crossbar in the opening minute for San Jose and that was as close as the Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids got to scoring in their 0-0 draw Saturday.

"It was a good ball, a good ball," Gordon said. "I was able to get free and try to put the ball on target. It was a bit high and hopefully the next time it goes in."

Chris Wondolowski's header cleared the crossbar late in the first half for San Jose (0-2-3), which is off to its worst start in 14 seasons. The Earthquakes opened 0-3 as the San Jose Clash in 1998.

"You look at how the 90 minutes unfolded, the way we had to dig deep at the end," San Jose coach Mark Watson said. "They had a lot of pressure on us and I think we'll take a lot of confidence out of the point."

Colorado (3-1-2) had its two-game winning streak snapped. The Rapids had few scoring chances until the final two minutes and the stoppage time at the end of the game.

"This was a whole different element in the way of playing the game," Colorado coach Pablo Mastroeni said. "They made it hard for us to play as opposed to go out and trying to play the game ourselves."

San Jose is unbeaten in three of its last four trips to Colorado. The Earthquakes haven't beaten the Earthquakes at home since 2010.
