Rabbit In Fort Collins Tests Positive For Dangerous Bacteria
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) – A rabbit has tested positive for tularemia in southeast Fort Collins.
Tularemia is a bacteria that can make people and other animals sick, so the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment wants residents in the Hahn Acres, Linden Park, Paragon Estates and Paragon Point neighborhoods to keep their pets on a leash when they are outside to prevent the bacteria from spreading.
Rabbits were dying off in the area over the past few weeks.
Tularemia can be transmitted by handling sick or dead animals infected with the bacteria. Insects can also spread the bacteria.
Signs of infection in humans include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, chest pain and coughing.
