Rabbit In El Paso County Test Positive For Plague
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A wild rabbit found dead in El Paso County has tested positive for plague.
The rabbit was found near a prairie dog burrow.
Authorities warned residents to take precautions to avoid fleas, which transmit the disease.
This summer four Coloradans tested positive for plague after coming into contact with a dog that contracted the disease in eastern Adams County.
The dog, health officials said, likely was exposed to a prairie dog or rabbit that was infected with plague-carrying fleas.
