Quiet Community Concerned After Peeping Tom Arrest

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) - Arvada police have arrested a 36-year-old man they believe to be a peeping tom in a quiet neighborhood, but conflicting reports are coming in from the community about the situation.

Confused residents near the 17000 block of West 87th Avenue aren't sure what to believe after learning one of their neighbors, Garrett Brown, is accused of being a peeping tom.

"It's so close, you just don't know," said Diane Butler. "It's your neighbor, and you don't think of your neighbors that way."

Surveillance video from last month shows a stranger peering into a teenage girl's room, trying to go through the front door, then going back to the window when he can't get in.

Butler saw the footage last month after her neighbor reported it to police.

"My husband went to the mailbox and said he thought he saw the guy that was in the video, so he came home and called the police," Butler said.

Neighbors say police made contact with a man who lives a few doors down from the teenage girl.

"They came back and said it was probably somebody who had been drinking and was at the wrong house," Butler said.

Arvada police arrested Brown one day after the video went public last week. He lives a few doors down from the teenager.

Now, the quiet community is concerned about a potential peeping tom living in their neighborhood.

"A couple of the neighbors up the street are getting security systems for their homes," Butler said. "It makes you more cautious of your surroundings, and it can happen in any neighborhood."

Arvada police arrested Brown pending attempted trespassing and invasion of privacy charges. Those charges have not yet been accepted by the Jefferson County District Attorney.
