Protests In Denver, Boulder Continue As Darren Wilson Resigns
DENVER (CBS4) - Protesters in Denver and Boulder rallied against the Michael Brown case again on Saturday shortly before the officer who fatally shot Brown resigned.
Nearly 100 protesters disrupted traffic in Boulder on Saturday, clogging major intersections to draw attention to their frustration that Darren Wilson, the officer who killed Brown, will not face charges. The protests were peaceful and police made no arrests. A few dozen protesters also gathered outside the Cherry Creek Mall in Denver on Saturday.
Wilson, 28, fatally shot Brown, 18, during a scuffle on Aug. 9, when Wilson attempted to question Brown about a shoplifting incident.
Wilson's attorney announced the officer's resignation on Saturday afternoon, nearly four months after Wilson, who is white, shot and killed Brown, a black teenager, in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. His resignation is effective immediately, his attorney said.
Grand jurors on Monday advised prosecutors against charging Wilson, a decision that enflamed communities across the nation and sparked massive protests and riots in Ferguson.
Tensions mounted in Denver on Monday and Tuesday nights, when Denver police clashed with protesters on Colfax Avenue near the Interstate 25 bridge. Three protesters were arrested after refusing to disperse peacefully. Police pepper-sprayed a small group.
Denver protestors on Saturday said they were purposefully targeting the Cherry Creek Mall because interrupting holiday spending would send a message. They're seeking a meeting with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, police Chief Robert White and other civic and education leaders, they said.
