Protesters Claim Raise By McDonald's Isn't Enough

DENVER (CBS4)- Protesters gathered outside a McDonald's restaurant in downtown Denver on Thursday, claiming a move by the fast foot giant to give workers a raise isn't enough.

More than a dozen protesters gathered outside the McDonald's on the 16th Street Mall in response to the fast food restaurant's decision to raise the hourly wage for some workers.

The 90,000 workers who qualify for the raise are only those who work for the 1,500 restaurants actually owned by McDonald's. About 90 percent of all McDonald's are owned by franchisees.

"I think it's unfair for, you know, just the small amount of pay raise and the small amount of people it will actually affect," said one protester.

Local owners of McDonald's restaurants released a statement, "Our restaurants' average wage runs anywhere between $9 to $11 an hour. We offer a competitive wage and benefits package consistent with the areas in which we do business."
