Proposition 107 Passes, Presidential Primaries Will Be Restored In Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - Colorado voters have approved a proposal that will increase the state's influence in presidential races.

Proposition 107's passage by a vote of 64 percent to 36 percent means the state will do away with presidential caucuses and replace them with primary elections. The state will return to having primaries in 2020, and they will be held before the month of March.

The primary push came after Democrats and Republicans alike grumbled about last March's presidential caucuses. Democrats had long lines and confusion; Republicans were miffed that they not to make a more direct choice for president.

State lawmakers failed this past legislative session to bring back presidential primaries, which would cost the state about $5 million. Colorado held presidential primaries from 1992 to 2000, then dropped them to save money.
