Probation For Former Detective Who Tipped Off Suspect

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A former Boulder police detective who sent a warning email to a suspect in an Internet child-luring case has been sentenced to three years of probation and must complete 500 hours of community service.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office says 58-year-old Jack Gardner was sentenced Friday. A jury convicted him in September of being an accessory to a crime, official misconduct and obstructing a peace officer.

Gardner's attorney said his client was in an impaired mental state when he sent the suspect an email from his work computer in June 2014 warning him not to meet a 13-year-old girl, who was really a Boulder police officer looking to arrest him. Investigators believe the detective tipped off the suspect because he was upset about being left out of the department's plan to arrest the man.
