Prescribed Burns Planned On Federal Land In San Luis Valley
MONTE VISTA, Colo. (AP) - Prescribed burns are planned on federal land at five locations in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado this spring, but the dates haven't been set.
Federal officials say the fires will total 5 square miles on land managed by the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
The dates of each burn will depend on the weather and the condition of the vegetation to be burned.

The sites are in the Monte Vista and Baca refuges, the Blanca Wetlands and the English Valley and Blue Creek areas.
The burns are intended to improve habitat for waterfowl, pronghorns and bighorn sheep and to restore a wet meadow.
Smoke might be visible for several days during and after the burns.
