Police Search For Thief Who Stole Guns, Ammo From Denver Deputy's Car

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver say a thief broke into a Denver sheriff deputy's vehicle and stole firearms and ammunition.

The theft is believed to have happened late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in Denver's Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, just southwest of Denver International Airport.

Police aren't being specific about the address where the crime took place, but they say the thief or thieves could also be responsible for breaking into several other vehicles in the area and stealing items.

Denver Sheriff's Department spokesman Simon Crittle said it appears the deputy's vehicle wasn't specifically targeted by the suspect. The car was the deputy's personal vehicle and was locked.

The following items were stolen:

- AR-15 rifle
- SDM 9 mm handgun
- 100 rounds of ammunition from the rifle
- 20 rounds from the pistol

Officers with the sheriff's internal affairs department are investigating the crime along with Denver police. So far no suspect description has been released.

The deputy's badge and ID were not stolen in the incident.
