Slashed Tires: Mischievous Kids Or Statement Against Affordable Housing?

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver need help catching a serial tire slasher who has struck more than three dozen times in one neighborhood.

"I've never been through anything like this. I have two kids, so slashing my tires right after Christmas, I had to use my rent money to pay for tires," said one resident.

Police have taken numerous reports of vehicle tires being slashed while parked near East Northfield Boulevard and North Trenton Street near the Northfield Apartments in Conservatory Green in Stapleton.

"I just came outside going to work and the car tires were slashed. I know it keeps happening over and over again and we're getting tired of it," said Tre Smith, a resident of the apartment complex. "What else am I supposed to do? I've got to work, bills (have) got to get paid. What else do I have to do? It's petty, get a life."

More than 38 tires have been targeted during the overnight hours on three different occasions.

Residents told CBS4 they think there's been more cases that haven't been reported to police. And residents say the same cars have been targeted more than once.

"Total for both times I've probably spent a good $600 on tires," said a resident.

Some of the tenants and the apartment complex are wondering if the vandals are mischievous kids or neighbors who didn't want the affordable housing complex to get built.
