Suspect In Custody After 2 Denver Officers Shot Near 6th & Santa Fe Drive

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police have a large presence near 6th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive. Two police officers were shot and were taken to the hospital.

Officials say their prognoses are good. Officials say the cause of the injuries is still under investigation. Officials say officers first responded to a call of shots fired at around 11:30 a.m.

Officials say the officers found a shell casing on the road, and then were fired upon. The two male officers were pulled to safety by other officers. One of those officers was veteran officer, another was an officer who just joined the force.

A SWAT team member was hurt in a separate vehicle crash.

"Thankfully they were brought here to Denver Health Medical Center... They're in fair condition," said Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen. Both officers are believed to be okay.

Police were also seen near 6th Avenue and Inca Street. At least two dozen officers, including SWAT team members, were seen with their weapons drawn on an unknown home.

A shelter in place was in effect for neighbors.

Denver police say a chemical agent was deployed to the home believed to have a suspect inside.

At around 4:40 p.m. a man exited the back of the home with his hands on his head. Moments later, he re-entered the home.

At around 5:30 p.m. a large fire erupted from inside the same home.

Just after 6 p.m. Denver police announced the suspect was taken into custody.

Eastbound 6th Avenue was closed now at Interstate 25 because of police activity. Santa Fe Drive was closed at 5th Avenue.
