Police: Man Shot, Killed By Security Guard Had Airsoft Gun With No Orange Tip

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – Police in Westminster say a man who was shot to death by a security guard brandished an airsoft gun that didn't have an orange tip on it.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Sunset Ridge Apartments located at 8300 North Sheridan Boulevard at approximately 1:25 a.m. David Ludewig, 24, was shot by the security guard after a confrontation.

Ludewig's family says he was drunk when he had the confrontation. He apparently went inside his apartment and emerged with the airsoft gun. The security guard then shot Ludewig.

An airsoft gun is a replica of a handgun that shoots pellets or BBs.

"The Westminster police would like to remind everyone it is difficult to differentiate between an airsoft gun and a real gun," Cheri Spottke with Westminster police said in a statement. "This is an ongoing investigation and the case will be presented to the district attorney's office later in the week."

Family members told CBS4 Ludewig was out celebrating news that his wife was pregnant with his first child.

Police released a statement saying they are not naming the security guard at this point, or which company employs him. It's not clear if the guard will face charges. The death is being investigated as a homicide, but police are trying to figure out if it was justified.
