Police In Colorado Catch Pair Wanted In Death Of Toddler In North Carolina

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP/CBS4) - A North Carolina woman and her fiance wanted in connection with the death of her 18-month-old daughter are in jail in Colorado.

Twenty-year-old Vanessa Ariana Sanchez of Fayetteville and 21-year-old Andrew Tyler Tomczak were arrested in the Colorado Springs area Wednesday night after another couple recognized their mugshots and turned them in.

"I just happened to see a post on Facebook that there was a couple wanted here in the Springs for murder, and I check out the article and their faces were staring back at me," said resident Stormy Gallagher.

An autopsy showed Violet Cortez died in January of a head injury due to multiple blunt force impacts.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby says Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and felony neglect child abuse with serious bodily injury. Tomczak was arrested on suspicion of "probation violation - felony assault by strangulation."

Fayetteville investigators said they have filed extradition paperwork to bring the couple back to North Carolina.

It's not clear if they have lawyers yet.

KKTV in Colorado Springs reported that a woman noticed on Facebook that the couple was wanted and turned them in.
