Plague Discovered In Mule Deer In Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - El Paso County health officials confirm a new case of the plague in Colorado Springs.

The disease was discovered in a mule deer.

The health department says the disease is usually spread by fleas and is most common in prairie dogs, rabbits and squirrels.

It's believed 16-year-old Taylor Gaes of Larimer County got the plague from infected fleas. Gaes died earlier this month of a dangerous form of plague that invades the bloodstream called septicemic plague.
