Pit Bull Ban Survives In Aurora
AURORA, Colo. (AP) - A pit bull ban up for a public vote in a Denver suburb was overwhelmingly supported Tuesday, a setback for national pit bull advocates.
Aurora voted nearly 2-to-1 to retain the city's nine-year-old ban on pit bulls. It was the first city in the nation to put a breed-specific ban on ballots in a general election.
Several hundred cities nationwide either prohibit dog breeds deemed a public safety risk or require them to be sterilized.
Aurora's pit bull ban is one of several along the Front Range. Denver, Castle Rock, Commerce City and Louisville also ban the breed.
Aurora's animal care division opposed repeal, saying dog bites in the city had gone down since the ban was adopted in 2005.
