Pit Bull Ban Lifted In Castle Rock

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - The ban on pit pulls in the Town of Castle Rock has been lifted after 25 years. But a provision on "dangerous dogs" will be in place.

The town council in Castle Rock reviewed all animal ordinances that have not been changed since 1993, including turning a breed ban into a policy that would examine behavior instead to determine if a dog is dangerous.

That is a two-tiered policy that breaks down like this: the first tier is for dogs that are deemed dangerous. Those dogs will either be removed from town limits or euthanized.

The second tier is for dogs that are seen as a potential danger after inflicting a minor injury on a person or a domestic animal. Owners of second tier dogs will need to obtain a permit for their pets.

The new ordinance goes into effect June 1.
