2 Young Brothers Drown In Little Thompson River
PINEWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Two children drowned in the Little Thompson River near Pinewood Springs in Larimer County Sunday afternoon.
CBS4's Jeff Todd interviewed some first responders who were visibly shaken over the deaths of the two boys under the age of 10.
The 911 call was made just before 12:30 p.m. and a massive amount of rescue crews responded, including those from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Boulder Dive Team, Longmont Emergency Unit, Pinewood Fire Department, Big Elk Fire Department, Estes Park Fire Department, Estes Park Dive Team, and Estes Park Ambulance Service.
"Emergency responders located both unresponsive children in the Little Thompson River. Lifesaving measures were taken and attempts to revive them were not successful," Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman Bobby Moll said in a statement.
Residents say three seasons out of the year it's possible to step over the river, but it's currently running high and cold. It is believed the boys were playing by the river just beyond a members-only picnic park.
Moll said the boys were brothers and live in the Pinewood Springs area.
"We got people up here within a reasonable amount of time, and then they started looking for them immediately," Moll told CBS4 at the scene. "I don't know how long they were in the river before the call or after the call."
Area residents say it's currently not peak runoff for the Little Thompson River but the water is high. They say upstream there are some whirlpools that some locals know about and frequent in the summer. But residents don't believe the children would have been in that area because of the high water level and the cold water temperature.
The boys identities will be later released by the coroner's office.
