Panthers Fans Are All About 'The Dab'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS4) - There are going to be thousands of Denver Broncos fans attending Super Bowl 50, but the Carolina Panthers will also have a number of die-hards in the Bay Area. CBS4's Stan Bush traveled to Charlotte to see what they're all about.

The Panthers have been mostly all about winning this season, but not just winning -- they are doing it with style -- particularly with a dance that's now sweeping the sports world.

You can't miss it on the streets of Charlotte -- a dance move called "The Dab."

"It's just their way of celebrating, and it's called on all over Charlotte; grandmas are dabbing," a Panthers fan said.

For the Panthers, The Dab is a sign of celebration, and there has been plenty of cause to bring it out. Around the Carolinas it has spread like a virus -- and that's kind of the point.

"It's catchy, it's really, really catchy," another Panthers fan said. "Kind of like a cold, it's really catchy."

Although it's origin is unknown, some say it's a reference to marijuana.

"But it's more potent," another fan said.

"In Colorado, we have legal marijuana, we should like The Dab," Bush told another Panther's fan.

"Yeah," he responded with a laugh.

Wherever it's from, it's now mainstream in the Carolinas.

Dance schools teach The Dab like it's a ballet.

"It started as a dance in Atlanta in the hip hop culture and I think a lot of different sports icons started doing it, and so it came in the mainstream media," a young dancer said.

"Well, I just do it and let it all out. I really don't know when I do it good," another young dancer said.
