Prominent Denver Attorney Hired To Represent Terry Maketa

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Prominent Denver attorney Pamela Mackey will represent El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, who is accused of misconduct, abuse of power and having romantic affairs with three employees to whom he allegedly showed favoritism.

Mackey, who represented NBA star Kobe Bryant in his sex assault case in Vail, will also represent the county against a litany of complaints by sheriff department staffers.

The county says Mackey will be paid $250 an hour, a reduced rate for her municipal work.

Maketa has apologized for his behavior, but he says he will not resign. He spoke about the allegations on Saturday in a video apology to his department. He said he had "engaged in inappropriate behavior in the past."

"When confronted about that behavior I denied it, thereby compounding the problem," Maketa said in the video.

County commissioners have unanimously agreed Maketa should step down. But he can only be removed through a recall vote.
