One hospitalized after shooting in downtown Denver apartment complex

A man was hospitalized after a shooting in a downtown Denver apartment complex Tuesday night.

Officers said the shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. at a residence in the 2300 block of Welton Street. Officers said they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and authorities said he is expected to survive.

SWAT members also responded and staged outside the scene at the Welton Park Apartments while authorities temporarily issued a shelter-in-place order for affected residents. Officials said the suspect, 53-year-old Paul Cushinberry, barricaded himself inside the apartment where the shooting occurred.

Cushinberry reportedly fired a shot through the wall at officers before he was placed under arrest just before 11 p.m. He is facing charges of attempted murder of a peace officer and investigation of first-degree assault.
