Officer Struck By Car On I-70 While Responding To Call

DENVER (CBS4) - Two people including an officer were injured in a car crash Friday morning on Interstate 70.

A Denver police officer was outside the patrol car while responding to a vehicle fire on I-70 at Peoria Street. At approximately 5:30 a.m., another vehicle driving by crashed into the cruiser and the officer was able to get out of the way.

The police cruiser was slightly damaged with a visible dent, and taken away by tow truck at 7 a.m. The other vehicle involved, a dark sedan, was extensively damaged.

The driver of that car sustained serious injuries, and the officer has minor injuries. Both are being called non-life threatening.

Miles of delays had built up by 6 a.m. Westbound travel of I-70 was closed between Interstate 225 and Chambers Road, until 6:40 a.m. when two lanes were opened.

The crash is under investigation and there is no word on possible charges.
