Police say a man in Lakewood called them to say his brother was threatening their 86-year-old father with a knife. They say a third brother was inside the home where the threat was happening.

Officers arrived to the home on South Clermont Street near East Warren Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Officials say the first officer met the third brother outside, and saw through a window the suspect standing next to his father with a gun in his hand.

That officer then drew his handgun and ordered the suspect to drop his gun.

Officials say the officer tried to get the suspect to comply for about six minutes, but was not successful. The suspect then shot his father, and the officer then shot the suspect. Officials say the shots were nearly simultaneous.

The victim and suspect both died.

A commander with Denver Police says the officer would have been justified if he shot sooner than he did, but also says every officer is certified in crisis intervention which means officers try to deescalate the situation before firing their weapon.
