Neighbors Thankful Homeowner, Animals Survived After Fire On Lookout Mountain
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that started in a garage and spread to a home on Lookout Mountain.
The fire happened on Saturday night on Vista Avenue in Golden, and the homeowner was able to escape without getting hurt along with animals he had at the home. So far it's not clear how much damage the fire caused.
Inter-Canyon Fire Rescue spokeman Dan Hatlestad said a fast response from five different fire departments, which included about 40 firefighters, kept the blaze from spreading to other homes nearby.
"The fire can rapidly extend into the grasses and trees surrounding homes. This area has limited water through its hydrants," Hatlestad said.
Eli Steigerwald and other neighbors said when the fire started they were concerned for the safety of both the homeowner and his animals.
"That was the worst feeling -- not being able to get to an animal that's in a house that could be burning down," he said.
"Something like this really prioritizes things and makes you stop and be thankful for what you have."
Neighbors Parker Juels and his brother Wesley saw the flames from further away.
"These people have goats and I was scared that they were going to fry with the house," Juels said.
"I'm just relieved that no one got hurt," Juels said.
In the coming days crews will evaluate the structure to see if the home is a total loss or if it can be renovated.
