Mystery Surrounds Departure Of Top Denver Sheriff Administrator

DENVER (CBS4) - An investigation is underway into one of the top commanders at the Denver Sheriff's Department who resigned in December, surprising colleagues and subordinates.

Michael Than was a division chief with the sheriff's department but stepped down, submitting a resignation letter to Undersheriff Gary Wilson.

While Than is no longer with the department, he is currently represented by attorney Reid Elkus, who told CBS4 he would not discuss the circumstances of Than's departure or the swirling investigation.

"There's nothing to comment on at this point," Elkus said.

CBS4 requested monthly billing statements for Than's department-issued credit card, but on Tuesday that request was turned down.

"There is currently an investigation into former Division Chief Than's actions during his employment with the Denver Sheriff Department," wrote Denver records coordinator Mary Dulacki. "Your request is denied because it would be contrary to the public interest to provide you the records you have requested at this stage of the investigation."

Dulacki did not elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

Than oversaw the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center in downtown Denver and is a former U.S. Marine, according to an online profile.
