Mountain Education Center Needs Day Of Service Help

JAMESTOWN, Colo (CBS4) - Cal-Wood Education Center is located outside of Jamestown. For 34 years, it's provided an outdoor learning environment for inner-city school kids as well as the general public. Visitors get to step back in time to 1906, as they tour the homestead on the property, complete with wood-burning stove.

"They're immersed in nature. They are here for three days. They stay here overnight, we feed them. We meet their teachers beforehand and design a program that will meet the academic needs for these kids," said Rafael Salgado, executive director of Cal-Wood Education Center.

The property was hit hard in the flood of 2013, and the center had to closed for seven months. It's reopened now but there is still a lot of damage on the property, including washed out roads. Some volunteers will be helping move logs after a fire mitigation project, and others will be helping with a project to save the Aspen trees on the property.

"They're going to build a fence around some Aspens we have here on the property. The Aspens in Colorado are decreasing from disease or elk damage. And so Parks and Wildlife and the State Forest Service are very interested in protecting the Aspens, so here at Cal-Wood we're partnering with them," Salgado told CBS4.
