Monument Teacher Named Colorado Teacher Of The Year

MONUMENT, Colo. (CBS4) - A teacher in monument has been named the Colorado teacher of the year.

Kathy Thirkell has taught math at Lewis Palmer High School for 34 years. She was honored for her passion and commitment to students.

"There are so many quality teachers in the state of Colorado and to be selected as a representative is unbelievable," Thirkell said.

Thirkell is known for writing songs to teach students math. Many students call her their second mom.

As the new teacher of the year, Thirkell will be honored in a ceremony at the White House and attend Space Camp for a week.
