He was expected to return from that venture Saturday afternoon, but did not.

Kato is an experience mountaineer. On September 30, he posted on his Facebook page that he was celebrating his 14th 14er.

Kato was found by search crews in the Pine Creek area which is near Missouri Mountain on Tuesday.

He had built a fire to keep warm and search crews in a helicopter spotted the fire.

Chafee County officials have not specified what led the experienced mountaineer astray.
