Mayor Hancock Signs Landmark Minority & Women-Owned Business Legislation
DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Mayor Michael Hancock signed landmark legislation to improve opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses.
Surrounded by business and city leaders Hancock signed the orders Wednesday morning.
Last year, a study found minority and women-owned businesses were being underutilized -- something the city is hoping to change.
"Denver is built on small businesses that are willing to build. It's time to open the doors of opportunity to those who have, until now, been overlooked," Hancock said.
Hancock said the landmark legislation "will level the playing field toward work at City Hall and set a standard for the private sector."
"Denver is embarking on a bold data-based, community driven solution to creating parity in the marketplace," Director of Small Business Opportunity Chris Martinez said. "These legislative actions are set to ingrain a value of opportunity within our departments, but it will take hard work every day to deliver on the high standards we have created for how we conduct business at the city."
The bills and executive order go into effect April 1.
