Man Who Shot At Iowa Officer Before Killing Himself ID'd As Colorado Springs Man

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a Colorado man who fired a gun at a Mason City police lieutenant before killing himself.

On Tuesday the Mason City Police Department identified him as 51-year-old Scott Olson, of Colorado Springs.

The department says an officer stopped Olson on suspicion of drunken driving early Monday morning. That officer and others soon saw that Olson was holding a gun to his own head.

The department says Olson fired a shot toward police Lt. Ron Vande Weerd, who was still in his vehicle. The shot missed.

Police say Olson shot himself moments later. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The department says Olson had been visiting relatives in Mason City for about a week.
