Murder Suspect Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Stepfather, Eluding Police
LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A man suspected of a homicide in the Denver suburb of Sheridan has been arrested after a search involving multiple law enforcement agencies Wednesday morning.
Police told CBS4 they believe Nicholas Benhmida shot his stepfather Wednesday at approximately 8 a.m. at West Bear Village, a mobile home park at 3500 South King Street.
According to police, Benhmida allegedly kicked the door down to the residence and shot his stepfather, who police haven't identified.
"There was some type of disagreement, argument, between a stepfather and a stepson," said Sheridan Police Chief Mark Campbell.
It doesn't appear Benhmida lived at the home but police said there was a witness in the home when the shooting happened but did not identify who it was. Neighbors said the two had a history of fighting.
"The stepson allegedly went out and got a shotgun and kicked the door in to a bedroom here in the unit and shot the step dad," said Campbell.
After he fled police warned that Benhmida was armed and dangerous.
Police searched a school -- Summit Academy at 3001 South Federal -- for Benhmida but he apparently wasn't there. During the search nearly a dozen other schools were also placed on lockout or lockdown status in the area, including all five schools in the Sheridan School District system and Mullen High School.
During the search police believe Benhmida committed a robbery at the Canyon View Animal Hospital located at 12482 West Ken Caryl Avenue in unincorporated Jefferson County shortly before 10 a.m.
Police caught up to Benhmida at approximately 10:30 a.m. near a Denny's restaurant located at Wadsworth Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue and arrested him without incident.
Police said Benhmida had two dogs with him when he was arrested. Animal Control was called to handle the dogs.
The lockouts at all schools have been lifted.
Benhmida remains in custody on first-degree homicide charges.
