Man Gets Just Over 2 Years For Killing Kitten

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — A man who killed a kitten and sent a video of the slaying to his estranged girlfriend has been sentenced to just over two years in prison.

Robert Heckmann was sentenced in Pueblo on Monday to 27 months behind bars after apologizing for his actions.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported that nearly 1,500 people backed an online petition urging Judge Victor Reyes to send him to prison.

Reyes said he didn't look at the names of those supporting the "Justice for Loki" campaign, saying sentencing decisions can't be swayed by public opinion.

Both prosecutors and Heckmann's lawyer asked for probation instead so he could get mental health treatment. But Reyes said Heckmann failed to comply with the terms of his probation for a previous assault case.
