Man Drowns In Lake Trying To Retrieve Radio-Controlled Boats
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A man's body was pulled from a lake in Englewood Monday night after swimming in to retrieve radio controlled electric boats.
He and a friend were operating remote controlled boats at Centennial Park at approximately 8 p.m. when the boats became entangled and broke down in the middle of the lake. The man jumped in and began to swim out to the boats.
The man was about 35-40 yards out from the dock when officers saw he was in distress and began to go under. Officers jumped in the lake in an attempt to rescue the man, whose friend and another witness also jumped in.
The officers dove down several times where they had last seen the man before he went under, but could not find him.
The Denver Fire Department responded with a dive team and a water rescue crew. At about 9:20 p.m., the dive team located the man in about 30 feet of water, roughly 40 yards out from the dock.
Paramedics performed CPR on shore and transported him to a hospital. The 55-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Officials said the rescue was made difficult by the dimming daylight and the extremely cold water.
No one who was involved in the incident has been identified.
