Man Drowns In Devil's Punchbowl East Of Aspen

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a drowning at a popular swimming hole east of Aspen.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to the Devil's Punchbowl between Aspen and Independence Pass at about 3:35 p.m. Friday after witnesses reported that a man had gone into the Roaring Fork River. The man, whose name and age have not been released, apparently was trying to help his wife after she fell into the water.

Witnesses said the man was underwater for 10 to 15 minutes, and it appeared he could not swim.
