Man Arrested Outside Elementary School In Stapleton

DENVER (CBS4)- A man was detained outside Isabella Bird Community School in Stapleton on Thursday afternoon after school was let out. He was arrested by Denver police a short time later.

According to police, the man approached the school at 3:05 p.m. after class had been dismissed and students had dispersed. The after school program was in session but none of the students were outside and the doors to the school were locked.

The man got into a scuffle with school security officers, according to Denver Public Schools spokesman Will Jones. Security officers detained the man until Denver police arrived.

Police said there was no indication that the man was attempting to do harm but officers investigated whether he was under the influence of a substance.

Doug Schepman, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department, said no guns were drawn during the incident.

Five police cars remained outside the school at 4 p.m. Thursday.

No students were harmed or in danger, according to the school. A spokesman with Isabella Bird said more details about the incident would be posted on the school's website.
