Man Accused In Sex Assaults Across U.S. Formally Charged In Colorado
DENVER (CBS4) – A man who was the subject of a nationwide manhunt and accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Colorado has been formally charged with the crime in Denver.
Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged Gregory Lewis, 26, with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of sexual assault, two counts of first-degree assault, and aggravated robbery.
Police say the Massachusetts man spent six weeks on the run after cutting off a court-ordered monitoring device. He's accused of committing a string of rapes, kidnappings and robberies of women in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Colorado and Oregon.
Lewis was captured Tuesday in Fort Edward after driving into the Hudson River while fleeing from a traffic stop.
"The charges allege that on Oct. 5 Lewis was in Denver and made arrangements to meet the victim, and then viciously attacked her, sexually assaulted her and robbed her at gunpoint," Lynn Kimbrough with the district attorney's office said in a statement.
Lewis has also been identified as a suspect in two other cases in Colorado.
