Loveland Police Officer Shooting Suspect Will Stand Trial

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4)- A judge has ruled that the man accused of shooting a police officer in Loveland will stand trial for the shooting.

Cody Powell has been charged with attempted murder and assault in the March 2 shooting of Loveland Police Officer Garret Osilka.

A judge ruled on Wednesday that there is enough evidence for Powell to stand trial in the shooting.

Osilka was wounded by a shotgun blast during a routine traffic stop. An intensive search began after the suspects drove off. He survived because his bullet-proof vest took most of the damage.

Powell, 23, turned himself in two days after that shooting.

On the day of the shooting, Powell texted his brother saying he was depressed and drinking heavily. Police say when Powell surrendered to police he told them he had a shotgun in his backpack. Police said he had two guns in his possession, but it's not clear what kind of guns they were.

Powell will return to court in June.
