Longmont Man Worried Dogs Targeted With Rat Poison
LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- A Longmont man believes someone could be targeting his dogs, or others in the neighborhood, with rat poison-- and it's not the first time.
"People who do this are cowards," said Doedo Schipper.
His wife spotted something strange in their yard on Saturday afternoon when he let the dogs outside to play.
"She found a big chunk of rat poison," said Schipper.
The poison was quickly scooped up before his Dachshunds, two years old and eight weeks old, could come into contact with it.
"Finding poison in the yard is very distressing," said Schipper.
It wasn't the first time his dogs have been targeted. Two years ago Schipper's dog "Casa" ate part of a poison-laced meatball found in his yard and became very ill. Several other poisonous meatballs were found in nearby yards. One dog died after eating one of the meatballs. Police did not find who was responsible.
"I cannot image that you'd go randomly through yards and throw poison," said Schipper.
Three years ago Schipper received a threatening letter from someone upset by his barking dogs.
"There's a school across the street, railroad a block away, it's 110 decibels... this is the sound of a civilized society," said Schipper.
While Schipper can't say for sure whether his dogs are being targeted, he wants other pet owners to be on alert, "Just realize no matter how nice your neighborhood is, people do crazy things."
Police in Longmont investigated and didn't find any more poison in the neighborhood. Officers believe it could be an isolated incident but asked other pet owners to be cautious.
