Local Firefighter's Self-Help Choking Video Goes Viral

DENVER (CBS4) - Veteran firefighter and paramedic Jeff Rehman lives for helping others to do the same.

Several years ago, Rehman, of Broomfield, invented a suction device for paramedics to use when clearing the airway of a victim. The existing technology was faulty and many paramedics would resort to using their fingers for scooping vomit and other blockage materials. He eventually found a medical device company to manufacture and sell the S3 -- Scoop, Suction and Sump.

Now, Rehman is helping to save lives again with his self-help choking technique video. Posted to YouTube nearly three years ago, Rehman and a lieutenant filmed the simple procedure for "How To Save Yourself If You Are Alone And Choking." Recently, he says, the video has gone viral with 1.5 million views.

Rehman says the move is simple and effective, much more so than attempting the Heimlich maneuver on oneself.

After receiving an email from a woman whose friend died by choking just days before she saw this video, Rehman is hoping to prevent any more lives lost by spreading this technique.
