Lindsey Vonn Announces She Won't Compete In The Olympics

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) - Skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn says she's had to make a "devastating" decision to skip the Winter Olympics next month in Sochi.

The Vail native made the announcement Tuesday morning through her Facebook and Twitter pages.

Vonn said the recovery time from her knee injury is taking longer than she had hoped.

"I did everything I possibly could to somehow get strong enough to overcome having no ACL but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level," Vonn wrote on her Facebook page.

Vonn said she will undergo a surgical operation in the near future, and that her next goal is to be skiing in Vail in February 2015 for the World Championships.

"I will be cheering for all of the Olympians and especially team USA," Vonn wrote.
